Guiding Images

Deep in our psychological makeup are master images mostly in the form of memories that guide the unfolding of our lives.  We cannot access those images at will,  but the Spirit of the Living God who indwells the redeemed  can and does access those images according to His sovereign will.  When that happens we might experience a remolding of those memories in an inner work that we cannot control.  We may revisit the scenes of certain dreams or actual events and see extreme reversals.  We may see the exact opposite transpire, as losses transform into gains, deep sorrow into unspeakable joy.

These are the molds that our daily experience typically flow into that are being “tampered with” so to speak but not in a negative sense,  but actually positively adjusted and reshaped and readjusted and recalibrated so that we first experience ourselves differently,  and then situations and people related to or connected to ourselves differently.

We might protest that if we change our memories we’re changing who we are since we are in some way the sum of all that has happened to us.  The earlier images are not being erased,  they are only being altered and added to,  or elaborated upon so that it’s not a denial of what originally happened.  Somehow those images are growing into something new for which those first experiences were but seeds.

Come to think of it there is an oriental art known as kintsukuroi which means literally to “repair with gold.”  Bowls or cups that were cracked or broken are repaired with gold or silver lacquer and thus become more beautiful for having been broken.  These redone,  overlaid guiding images are like that.  A layering occurs and the resulting contrast strikes a chord or imparts and infuses a beauty that didn’t exist before except in seed form.  Our DNA is transforming causing our lives to play out with a surprising difference right before and under our eyes!
